The role of central banks in prudential supervision

22 March 2001

The recent debate on the reorganisation of the supervisory structures in some euro area countries has led the Governing Council of the ECB to assess the involvement of central banks in prudential supervision.

The Governing Council is firmly convinced that there are valid reasons, also in relation to the effects of the introduction of the euro, arguing in favour of maintaining a strong involvement of central banks in prudential supervision.

The Governing Council has decided, for reasons of transparency, to make its position known to the public. To that end, a note on this issue is available in all official Community languages on the ECB's and the NCBs' websites.
